Tibb An Nabawi

“We have sent among you an apostle (Muhammad) from among yourselves, rehearsing to you our signs and instructing you in scripture and wisdom and in new knowledge.” (Sūrat al-Buqarah, āyat 150)
The human being – al-Insān – has been created in the best possible form and shape. Since he is a vicegerent and custodian – a khalīfah in the earth, he needs, as a prerequisite, good health and wellbeing to fulfil his role. Islam provides guidance for all facets of human life and hence lays down general principles in most fields, including health medicine. There are numerous verses – āyats – in the Qu’rān dealing with healing of disease, health, foods and hygiene. The Prophet Muhammad dealt with many matters specifically dealing with his own, his companions and the general health of the Muslim community. Early in Islamic history, the sayings and actions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, concerning medicine were assembled into authentic collections and remained distinct. This body of knowledge and practice were systematised by Muslim scholars and physicians under a general title known as at-Tibb an-Nabawī.
